History Has Begun: The Dawn of a New America – Bruno Maçães and Tom Holland in Conversation

On Monday, 6th April, the British Foreign Policy Group hosted Bruno Maçães and Tom Holland for a virtual launch of Bruno’s keenly awaited new book, ‘History Has Begun: the Dawn of a New America.’ Maçães offers a compelling perspective on America’s past and future, arguing that America is becoming a new global civilisation, distinct and separate in identity from its European origins. The lively discussion covered America’s unique global role, as well as the impact of American identity on shifting power dynamics between America, Europe and China as the COVID-19 crisis continues to shape the geopolitical landscape.

Bruno Maçães is a non-resident senior fellow at the Hudson Institute, a senior advisor at Flint Global and a senior fellow at Renmin University of China. Formerly Portugal’s Europe minister (2013–15), he has been a regular commentator for CNN, the BBC and Al Jazeera, and has written for the Financial Times, The Guardian and Foreign Affairs. He is the author of Belt and Road, also published by Hurst, and The Dawn of Eurasia.

Tom Holland is an award-winning historian, author and broadcaster. His history books have garnered wide acclaim, and include, Dominion: The Making of the Western Mind, Millennium: The End of the World and the Forging of Christendom, and Rubicon: The Triumph and the Tragedy of the Roman Republic.
