03 Feb Washington lets Huawei decision slide – POLITICO

Director of the British Foreign Policy Group, Sophia Gaston, spoke to POLITICO on the UK’s Huawei decision, and how US politicians in Washington have let the UK ‘slide’ after heavy lobbying against the decision.

Sophia said that Prime Minister Boris Johnson would: “undoubtedly be relieved to hear that a U.K.-U.S. trade deal is being treated by Washington as an entirely separate matter from this security dispute, and those concerned about the discord within the West will be glad that one of the most integral relationships at its heart will endure another day.”

She went on to say that: “it is not in (Donald Trump’s) interests at this moment to fracture [his] relationship with Britain over the Huawei dispute. The pressures of an election year, and the need for global allies to support [U.S.] trade and defense interests have compelled Secretary Pompeo to offer pathways to reconciliation — injecting a gray area into what was previously framed as a black and white issue.”
