Running Out of Credit? The Decline of the Foreign Office and the Case for Sustained Funding

A new report authored by Sam Goodman, a BFPG Associate, lays out the trajectory and impact of cuts to the FCO budget back to 1973, arguing that the FCO is a shadow of its former self, and emphasises the need for a new foreign policy strategy in a post-Brexit Britain. The aim of the report is to provide an academically rigorous public document supporting an informed discussion on the choices facing the UK regarding FCO funding. It features forewords written by Sir Simon Fraser and Tom Tugendhat MP.

The report, RUNNING OUT OF CREDIT? THE DECLINE OF THE FOREIGN OFFICE AND THE CASE FOR SUSTAINED FUNDING, suggests that there is a distinct correlation between Britain’s declining influence and the resources under the Foreign Office’s direct control. Furthermore, with an up-coming departmental spending review, the report outlines why stable investment in our diplomatic infrastructure is paramount if Britain is to maintain its status on the world stage.
